Strange Days
Odd holidays from around the world.
There are 365 days in the year and each of them has been marked by somebody as special in some way. Often it is for a good cause such as wearing headscarves for cancer awareness, but sometimes it is just plain bizarre.
April Fool's Day is one of the oldest bizarre holiday days - a day in which pranks are encouraged. Newspapers write ridiculous stories and radio stations tell outrageous lies.
Back in 1957, the BBC news in Britain included a story about 'growing' spaghetti and showed a film of Swiss peasants pulling spaghetti down from tree branches. Huge numbers of viewers phoned in asking how they could grow their own spaghetti. The BBC replied that they should "place a piece of spaghetti in a can of tomato sauce and hope for the best".
The tradition of April Fool's Day goes right back to ancient Rome, but many bizarre holiday days were created more recently. They often start as someone's bright idea, and then spread quickly around the world on the internet. This is how we ended up with 'No Housework Day' (April 7); 'Thank a Mailman Day' (February 4); and 'Blame Somebody Else Day' (September 13). It's not really clear how many people actually know about these holidays, let alone celebrate them.
The list of bizarre holiday days is probably longer than you'd imagine. If you're bored, try looking on the internet and see what you can celebrate to put a little fun in your day. There are many to choose from; National Honesty Day, Look Alike Day, Hug an Australian Day. And that's just in the month of April.
